Ferry services disrupted, long tailbacks

Madaripur Correspondent: Strong current due to rough weather has continued disrupting ferry services on Shimulia-Kathalbari route, creating long tailbacks on the both sides of the Padma.
Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) suspended ferry service on Wednesday midnight (around 12.00pm) due to storm and strong current. Only seven ferries out 18 started operation after 10.00am on Thursday.
As a result, thousands of passengers are facing ordeal from Wednesday to cross the river route.
During visit, it was seen the ferry service disruption has created a long traffic jam at Kathalbari. Several hundred vehicles, including passenger coaches and cattle-laden trucks, were remained stranded. Particularly cattle traders are suffering a lot for several hours. They alleged that their cattle are becoming sick and many have already died.
Kathalbari Ferry Ghat Manager Salam Mia said rough weather has created a disruption of smooth ferry movement on the river route, creating tailbacks on the both sides of the river.
