Global death toll from coronavirus rises to 4,027

The global death toll from novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has risen to 4,027 and the number of people infected with the fast-spreading virus now stands at 114,442 worldwide.

The lethal virus has already spread to 115 countries and territories across the world.

Around 64,081 coronavirus infected people have so far recovered after receiving treatment suggested for the virus and been discharged from hospitals.

17 fresh deaths in coronavirus were reported in mainland China on Monday (March 9), according to China’s National Health Commission.

Since the virus was first identified in the Chinese city of Wuhan late last year, the death toll across mainland China has risen to 3,136. The total number of confirmed cases in mainland China now stands at 80,754. Among them, 59,905 people diagnosed with the virus have recovered.

Outside China, Italy's total known number of COVID-19 cases crept past that of South Korea, becoming the country with the second-highest number of infections Monday after China.

Italian government authorities say the country now has 9,172 cases. So far, 463 people have died from coronavirus in Italy.

In South Korea, the death toll from coronavirus has risen to 54. The virus has already infected over 7,513 in the country.

Iran reported a total number of 7,161 coronavirus cases among of them 237 have already died.

Among the other countries affected by the virus, France reported 30 deaths, Japan 9, Spain 30, the United States 27, Switzerland two, the United Kingdom 5, Netherlands 4, Hong Kong 3, Australia 3, Iraq 7, Egypt 2 and San Marino 2. On the other hand, Thailand, Taiwan, Argentina and Philippines reported one death each.

Late last year, the outbreak of coronavirus began in the Chinese city of Wuhan.
