Govt to build flats for Biharis

The government has planned to provide rehabilitation facilities to Biharis who are living at the Geneva Camp in the city's Mohammadpur area.

Flats with sufficient civic amenities will be constructed in Basila for them. Ministry of Housing and Public Works took a project worth Tk 6,101.23 crore.

The main target of the government is to create temporary/permanent employment opportunities for Biharis alongside rehabilitation facilities through the project.

Planning ministry sources said, the meeting of Project Evaluation Committee (PEC) will be held on September 26. Several sides of the project will be evaluated in the meeting. If everything goes well then, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will approve the project later.

The project will be implemented by using government fund. The duration of the project is estimated- July, 2019 to June, 2022.

Geneva Camp in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur is a colony of the stranded Pakistanis who migrated to the then East Pakistan from the Indian state of Bihar during the partition of 1947. There are 116 Bihari Camps in the countries. Of them, Geneva Camp is the biggest settlement for Biharis.

Ministry said, 1,000 acres of land will be acquired under this project. The project includes- land development, 20 storied five building, commercial building construction, a playground, RCC road construction, RCC main drainage, 10 culvert, deep tube-well, power station, roads and gate light, consultant recruitment, Jeep procurement, gas connection, tree plantation and others.
