HC publishes verdict issuing 7 directives to NHRC

The High Court (HC) has published its verdict issuing seven directives to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) over the torture of domestic help Khadiza at Mirpur in the city in 2013.

In the verdict, the High Court has expressed its dissatisfaction over role of NHRC in preventing human rights violations.

The HC bench of Justice Sheikh Hasan Arif and Justice Rajik Al Jalil published the order on Wednesday.

After a national daily published a report on the torture incident, Children Charity Foundation sent a letter to the NHRC to take necessary legal steps against the torture on Khadiza.

After five years on December 22, 2018, the Children Charity Foundation filed the writ petition challenging the NHRC’s inaction regarding Khadiza's complaints.

Later, the High Court issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain to why the failure of the NHRC to provide an appropriate remedy for incidents of human rights violations should not be declared illegal.
