HC wants to know all-out state of prisoners

The High Court wanted to know about the all-out condition of prisoners who are currently in jails across the country in a situation triggered by coronavirus or COVID-19.

It has been asked to inform the prosecutors about the all-out condition of the prisoners staying in the jails across the country within June 15.

A virtual HC bench led by Justice M Enayetur Rahim passed the order orally following a writ petition on Tuesday (June 2).

The next hearing in this regard will be held on June 15.

Advocate Mohammad Shishir Monir stood for the writ petition while Deputy Attorney General Amit Talukdar represented the state during the hearing in the court.

The writ was filed with the High Court (HC) on May 17 seeking its directives to take necessary measures to ensure health safety of 89,000 prisoners amid coronavirus pandemic.

Supreme Court Lawyer Shishir Monir filed the writ petition with the virtual bench of justice Obaidul Hasan.

Monir said they sought implementation of the recommendation of the World Health Organization (WHO) to ensure health safety of jail inmates.
