Prime suspect Enamul brought to RAB Headquarters in Dhaka for questioning after his arrest at Brahmanbaria Railway Station

Dhaka, Feb 9 (risingbd24.com)--Enamul Kabir, a prime suspect of journalist couple Sagar-Runi murder case, has been brought to Dhaka after Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)  arrested him from Brahmanbaria Railway Station early in the morning on Saturday.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of the RAB`s intelligence wing arrested Enamul, who was also the security guard of the Sagar-Runi`s flat building, at Brahmanbaria Railway Station.

Sources said Enamul had been absconding after the murder of Sagar-Runi last years and he was hiding in Srimongol. Concealing his identity, he worked in different tea gardens of Srimongol. Enamul went to Brahmanbaria Railway Station after midnight on Friday. He was arrested from there at 4:50am.

RAB DG Mokhlesur Rahman said the arrested were ‘suspects’ of the murder – but no definite evidence linking them to murder has been established as yet.

The RAB Chief made the statement at the press brief on Saturday.

Police recovered the mutilated bodies of Sagar Sarwar, News Editor of Maasranga Television, and Meherun Runi, a Senior Reporter of ATN Bangla, deom their West Razabazar flat on February 11 last year. Enamul alias Humayun Kabir.

RAB said they questioned Enamul after his arrest, but he denied his involvement in the incident of killing. However, RAB officials said they found inconsistencies between the information provided by two other security guards of the flat building with the information provided by Enamul.

After the murder of Sagar-Runi, a total of 127 people have so far been questioned, while the DNA samples of 16 people have been sent abroad for examination. On the other hand, eight people have been arrested so far in connection with the incident.

Following the murder of the journalist couple, detectives arrested Enamul. But, he was freed later. Since then Enamul had been absconding. Home Minister Dr Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir himself announced a bounty of Tk 10 lakh at a press conference at the Bangladesh Secretariat on October 9 last year.

Later, the RAB was given the responsibility of investigating the gruesome murder case at the directive of the High Court. Since then the intelligence wing of the RAB started investigating the case.

RAB anticipated that Enamul knew many things about the murder and mystery into the double murders would be unearthed if he could be arrested and questioned.

Later, RAB launched a combing operation to arrest Enamul considering him as a prime suspect of the sensational murder case. Anticipating this, Enamul went to Brahmanbaria Railway Station fleeing away from Srimongol to go to some other places, said RAB.

The arrested Enamul is the son of Makbul Hossain Kala of village Purbo Dakkhinvag under Dakkhinvag union of Borolekha upazila in Moulvibazar district. The law enforcers carried out operations to Enamul`s village home to arrest him. At one stage, Enamul`s father Mokbul Hossain Kala went missing from his village home on September 27 last year. He was found abandoned at a place in Bhairab on October 17 last. Sick Kala reached his village home on the following day.

On November 4 last year, Enamul`s father was brought to the RAB headquarters in Dhaka where he was questioned by the investigation officers led by Mohammad Zafar Ullah, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police of RAB`s Investigation and Forensic Wing.
