Monsoon rain disrupts city life

Staff Correspondent: Hours of monsoon rain have disrupted the normal life of the city-dwellers. Specially, the downpour created havoc for commuters and pedestrians from all walks of life in Dhaka on Friday.

Streets of different parts of the city including Mauchak, Malibagh, Moghbazar, Razarbag, Old Dhaka and Mirpur were submerged by the rainwater that created immense traffic congestion at many points.

Traffic movement got slowed on the submerged roads.  Many commuters were seen facing shortage of public transport to reach their destinations.

Besides, many parts of the city were affected due to water-logging for want of proper drainage facilities.

Beginning this morning, the rain came down hard around 12:00pm and continued for around two hours.

The Met office recorded 48mm rain between 12:00pm and 2:00pm in Dhaka.

A meteorologist said slight to moderate rainfall is now occurring in many parts over the country including Rangpur, Mymensingh, Sylhet, Chottogram, Barishal and Khulna. The flow of the rain may decrease within in a day or two, the meteorologist added.

Meanwhile, incessant monsoon rain overnight triggered flooding in several parts of the country swelling waters in three river basins, marooning thousands of people and disrupting road communications in different areas.

The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) on Friday warned water levels in rivers could rise further.
