The Election Commission (EC) has given instruction to the law enforcers that no candidates for the upcoming Dhaka city corporations' elections and their supporters could be arrested without warrant.
EC's senior secretary Mohammad Alamgir informed this while talking to journalists at his office on Tuesday.
"As per the decision taken by the commission on Monday, I've talked to the DMP Commissioner. They have clearly been instructed that no candidates and their supporters can be arrested if there was no previous warrant against them. But, they can take action to protect the lives and property of people and the state if anyone commits fresh criminal offence or if there is any court order," he said.
Alamgir also said the law enforcement agencies will be given further instructions in the meeting with them, scheduled for January 22.
Replying to a question, he said journalists will be provided with ID cards and car stickers to visit polling centres freely.
"Journalists can enter the polling centres freely except to visit the secret chamber. They can also interview all concerned including of polling officers, candidates and agents. A decision has been taken in this regard," he added.
