‘Old building to be made earthquake safe’

State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Dr Md Enamur Rahman has said old buildings will be made earthquake safe after repairing them.

The minister said this while addressing a seminar organized by national resilience program of Disaster Management and Relief ministry at Hotel Intercontinental in Dhaka on Sunday.

He said that the government is working to build earthquake safe building. Specially, the old building will be made earthquake safe after repairing those. Japan government will help to build such buildings, other structures and JICA will provide all kinds of financial assistance.  

Dr Md Enamur Rahman also said, “Due to the geographical position, Bangladesh is a very earthquake-prone country. It will be tough to overcome if medium to high level earthquake takes place in the country. So, there is no alternative of building earthquake-safe structures. A long-term planning has been taken to implement the project.”
