Professor Emajuddin dies

Former vice-chancellor (VC) of Dhaka University (DU) professor Emajuddin Ahmed has passed away (Inna Lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un).

Emajuddin, also known as a pro-BNP intellectual, breathed his last at a city hospital at 7:35am on Friday (July 17).

Professor Naznin, daughter of Emajuddin, confirmed the death of her father to risingbd and said that her father started vomiting around 2am and later he was rushed to the Labaid Hospital in Dhanmondi but died at 7:35am.

“My father was completely normal. We are yet to find out any problem that he was suffering,” she added.

“My father will be buried near mother’s grave at Mirpur Martyred Intellectuals graveyard in the capital. Before burial, his namaz-e-janaza will be held after Asr prayers,” Naznin further said.

Shamsuddin Didar, a member of the BNP chief's press wing, also confirmed the demise of professor Emajuddin Ahmed.

Emajuddin, a political scientist, was born on December 15 in 1932 in Maldaha and his family moved to Chapainawabganj after the partition of India.

After completing his early education in Rajshahi, he finished post-graduation in political science and began to teach at Rajshahi College. Following higher studies abroad, Emajuddin joined the Political Science Department of Dhaka University in 1970.

Emajuddin was appointed the vice chancellor of Dhaka University in 1992. He went into retirement in 1998 but continued teaching. He joined as the vice chancellor of University of Development Alternative (UODA) in 2002.
