Prothom Alo editor gets anticipatory bail

The High Court has granted a four-week anticipatory bail to Prothom Alo Editor Matiur Rahman  in a case over the death of Dhaka Residential Model College (DRMC) student Nayeemul Abrar.

The bench headed by Justice Obaidul Hassan came up with the order on Monday.

The court also instructed law enforcement agencies not to arrest or harass five other until police submits its report.

On Sunday, the High Court fixed Monday for the anticipatory bail hearing of six people including Prothom Alo Editor Matiur Rahman.

Earlier in the day, Prothom Alo Editor Matiur Rahman and Deputy Editor Anisul Hoque along with four others filed for an anticipatory bail petition with the High Court.

The other four petitioners who sought bail are: Shah Paran Tushar, Mahitul Alam Pavel, Kabir Bakul and Shuvashish Pramanik.

On January 16, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Kaisarul Islam issued an arrest warrant against 10 people, including Prothom Alo Editor Matiur Rahman and Deputy Editor Anisul Hoque, over the death of Dhaka Residential Model College (DRMC) student Nayeemul Abrar.

On November 1, Nayeemul Abrar, a grade nine non-residential student of DRMC, was electrocuted by a power generator on the school premises, during a programme organized by Kishor Alo, a supplement of Prothom Alo for young readers. Anisul Hoque is the editor of Kishor Alo.

Nayeemul's father Md Mojibur Rahman later filed a case with the court of Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Haque, accusing the organizers’ negligence which led to his son's death.
