Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) is working relentlessly to make the country food self-sufficient. However, pension scheme has not been introduced in the institution although 50 years have been passed.

Agricultural Minister Dr Abdur Razzak has sent a letter to Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal in this regard recently.

In the letter, he said, Rice Research Institute is playing an important role improving and producing technologies of rice to maintain sustainable food security in the country.

Pension scheme is going on in similar institutions of agriculture research institute except rice research institution. Officer-staff are demanding pension scheme in the institutions.

Dr. Md Shahjahan Kabir, Director-General of the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) told risingbd, “We have taken up the issue of ensuring food security as a challenge. 38 million metric tonnes of paddy are being produced in the country right now. There is no option to deny the role of BRRI in this regard.”

He also said, around 800 staff are deprived of pension scheme although the similar institution of agriculture institute get the same facilities. We have been making efforts over the issue for a long time. But, no steps have been taken yet.
