Salim Prodhan jailed for 8 yrs in graft case

A Dhaka court has sentenced casino kingpin Salim Prodhan to eight years in jail in a corruption case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for amassing wealth illegally.

The court also fined him Tk 11 lakh.

Judge Md Badrul Alam Bhuiyan of Dhaka Special Judge’s Court-8 delivered the verdict on Sunday (April 30).

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Salim from a Bangkok-bound flight at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on September 30, 2019.

They later raided Selim’s two offices in Gulshan and Banani and seized 48 bottles of foreign liquor, Tk29 lakh, foreign currency worth Tk77 lakh, 12 passports, a computer server, four laptops, and two deer hides.

On October 27, 2019, the ACC filed a case against Selim for amassing illegal wealth amounting to Tk12.27 crore.

Salim has been charged with accumulating wealth illegally under Section 27 (1) of the ACC Act, 2004. He also committed a punishable offense under the Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2012 by siphoning off money to Thailand and the United States, according to ACC sources.
