SC orders GP to pay Tk 1,000cr

The Supreme Court (SC) has directed Grameenphone (GP) to pay Tk 1,000 crore to Bangladesh Telecom Regulatory Commission (BTRC) within next Monday.

A bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order on Thursday.

Earlier, the Appellate Division ordered Grameenphone to pay Tk 2,000 crore within three months out of Tk 12,580 crore.

Barrister Mehedi Hasan Chowdhury and Advocate AM Aminuddin stood for Grameenphone while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam and Barrister Khandaker Reza-E-Raquib stood for BTRC.

On October 17 last year, the High Court issued a two-month injunction on the BTRC’s move to realise money from Grameenphone.  Later, BTRC filed a petition seeking a stay on the High Court order that issued an injunction on its move.
