SK Sinha takes oath as 21st Chief Justice

President Md Abdul Hamid administers the oath to Surendra Kumar Sinha as Chief Justice at the Bangabhaban

Staff Correspondent: Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha has taken oath as the 21st Chief Justice of People’s Republic of Bangladesh.


President Md Abdul Hamid administered the oath taking ceremony at the Bangabhaban at 11:00am on Saturday.

 

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, just retired Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain and other previous chief justices were present at the ceremony.

 

Earlier on January 12, the government appointed Justice Sinha to the office.


According to the notification of Law Ministry, the President has appointed Sinha as the chief justice as per the article 95 (1) of the constitution.


Justice Sinha, the most senior Appellate Judge in the Supreme Court, succeeds Justice Md Muzammel Hossain who retires on Jan 16.


He is the first non-Muslim who hold the top judiciary position in the Muslim-majority Bangladesh.

 

The  Chief Justice will be in office for just over three years with his retirement due in early 2018.
