Staff Correspondent: The first modern sculptor of Bangladesh and one of the original designers of the Central Shaheed Minar Novera Ahmed has died at the age of 85 (Inna lillahi … raji`un).
The renawaned artist died in her sleep on Tuesday night (local time) at her home in Chantemesle near Paris, according to a press release of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs.
The prime minister expressed deep shock at the death of the eminent sculptor. In a condolence message, Sheikh Hasina said Novera’s death is a great loss to the whole nation.
She also prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and expressed her sympathy to the bereaved family members.
Novera Ahmed was born in 1930 in Kolkata. She studied in Calcutta and Comilla, and was awarded a Diploma in Design in the Modeling and Sculpture course from Camberwell School of Art in London in 1955.
At one stage in her career, Novera collaborated with Hamidur Rahman and was credited with the original design of the Central Shaheed Minar.
