The High Court has relieved former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Dr. ATM Shamsul Huda of contempt of court charges.

A HC bench comprising Justice Quazi Reza-ul Haque and Justice ABM Altaf Hossain passed the order on Tuesday morning.

Appearing before the court, former CEC said his speech was not presented in the newspaper properly.

Earlier, the High Court summoned the former CEC to appear before the court on June 3 to explain his `derogatory` remarks about the judiciary.

Besides, the court also issued a suo moto rule asking as to why punitive action should not be taken against the former CEC.

The Home Secretary, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner, the Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka, the officer-in-charge of Gulshan thana and Dr ATM Shamsul Huda were asked to reply to the rule within two weeks.

The English daily `The Daily Star` published a report titled, `No rule of law`, quoting the speech of the former CEC delivered at a seminar arranged by Centre for Policy Dialogue.
