‘Shovon, Rabbani spreading lies over extortion’

Savar Correspondent: Jahangirnagar University Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Farzana Islam said that Chhatra League President Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon and General Secretary Golam Rabbani are spreading lies over demanding extortion.

She said, “The news of demanding extortion of Shovon and Rabbani published in different media is totally false and baseless.”

She told this to the reporters on Saturday.

Prof Farzana said, “(I) read a good story after long days. I have nothing more to say. It is totally a false story. No talks with them took place over money.”

She further said, “They (BCL) do their works on their own style. They told me where they work and get how much percentage. But I replied that never talk to me over any money.”

The VC said, “I believe that country’s head knows better that they made a story or me. Besides, the truth will be surfaced if any investigation is conducted.”

Earlier, quoting JU VC, media reports that Shovon and Rabbani demanded “4 to 6 percent” in cuts from a Tk 1,445-crore project at Jahangirnagar University.

After initial denial to a number of media outlets, Rabbani admitted that they indeed demanded their “fair share” from the VC, although he would not say how much. He said they wanted money for their “Eid expenditure”. 

He also brought allegations against the VC and her family of giving Tk 1.6 crore to the Jahangirnagar University Chhatra League so they did not get in the way of the development project.
