Singer Arfin Rumey lands in jail

DHAKA, Oct 12: A Dhaka court on Saturday sent singer Arfin Rumey and his brother Yasin Rony to jail scrapping his bail plea in a case filed over allegedly torturing his (Rumey) wife for dowry.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Atiqur Rahman passed the order after hearing arguments.

Rumey’s first wife Lamiya Akhter Ananya, the case`s plaintiff, was also present during the hearing, curt sources said.

Earlier in the day, Rumey and his brother were arrested on the basis of a complaint lodged by Ananya with Mohammadpur police station and taken to court around 2pm.

Ananya filed the case on Friday night alleging that Rumey often tortured her for dowry.

According to case details, Rumey had been demanding Tk 2 million as dowry since their marriage. The complainant was beaten up on Friday.

Rumey has also married a non-resident Bangladeshi about a year back.

Rumey was a member of the band Durbin and performs solo as well.

As a composer, he gain popularity in 2010 with the song `Er beshi Bhalobasha Jay Na` sung by Shafiq Tuhin.
