US coronavirus cases pass 300,000

The number of coronavirus cases in the United States has topped 300,000, with more than 8,000 fatalities.

According to a tally by Johns Hopkins University, 300,915 people were confirmed infected in the US as of Saturday afternoon. 8,162 people had died.

Officials of the hardest-hit state of New York announced on Saturday that more than 10,000 new cases were confirmed, bringing the total to 113,704. They announced 630 fatalities, which is the largest daily increase, raising the total to 3,565.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo told reporters that his state needs more doctors and nurses and that he is planning the logistical operation to get up and running as soon as possible.

The governor said he was signing a new executive order to allow medical students who are slated to graduate to begin practicing at hospitals.

He also expressed concern over a probable shortage of artificial respirators. He said the Chinese government is going to facilitate a donation of 1,000 ventilators.
