US coronavirus death toll surpasses 100,000

The death toll in the U.S. from the novel coronavirus or COVID-19 surpassed the 100,000 mark early Wednesday (May 27), according to data from Worldometers.  

The running tally from Worldometers counted 100,572 deaths and 1,725,275 cases.

The U.S. continues to lead worldwide deaths from the virus after the UK reported 37,048, followed by Italy with 32,955.

More than 479,969 people have recovered in the U.S., according to the data.

New York is the state worst-hit by the pandemic, with 29,406 deaths followed by New Jersey with 11,197 deaths.

Since the virus emerged last December in the Chinese city of Wuhan, it has spread to at least 213 countries and two international regions.

Around 5,684,795 people have been found infected with the virus globally and nearly 352,225 deaths. More than 2,430,593 have recovered.
