Varsity student takes own life due to affair

Police have recovered the hanging body of a student of Stamford University from the capital’s Dholaikhal area.

Sayem Hasan Shanto, 21, was recovered from his room around 7:15 pm on Sunday.

His relatives said Shanto was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his room around 7:00 pm on Sunday. Earlier, he posted a status on Facebook blaming the parents of his girlfriend for not accepting their relationship. The post also involved a case filed against Shanto.

Shanto’s father Ripon said, “Shanto had an affair with a girl who came to our house to stay with us on November 26. Later, the girl’s father came to take his daughter but she refused to go. Lastly, he left behind his daughter after beating her.”

Later, the girl’s father filed an abduction case against Shanto with Kotwali Police Station and following the case Shanto was arrested and released on Friday last.

Before committing suicide, he posted a status on Facebook blaming the parents of his girlfriend for his death, Ripon said.

Confirming the matter, Kazi Wazed Ali, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sutrapur Police Station, said the body was sent to Midford Hospital morgue for autopsy.
