War Crimes Trial: Azhar files review petition

Convicted war criminal ATM Azharul Islam has filed a review petition seeking for reconsideration of the Supreme Court verdict that upheld his death penalty for his involvement in genocide and crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.

Advocate Shishir Manir, a defence lawyer for the Jamaat-e-Islami leader, filed the review petition with the division concerned on Sunday noon.

He said, ‘The 23-page review petition contains 14 grounds for consideration of acquittal.’

Earlier, the Supreme Court released the full text of the verdict on March 25 this year, clearing the way for Azharul to move a petition seeking review of the verdict.
