We successful in combating militancy: RAB DG

Director General of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun has said that the law enforcing agencies have been successful in combating militancy, extremism and terrorism, but we not feeling complacent.

The RAB DG paid his tribute at the Holey Artisan site on Wednesday and reiterated the law enforcing agencies’ vow to stomp out militancy.

Abdullah Al-Mamun said militancy is a global problem. The whole world is facing this problem. Bangladesh is facing the same. Militancy situation in the country is now under control but they (militants) are still looking for opportunities.

Asked by reporters, the RAB chief said law enforcement agencies conducted extensive operations against militancy before and after the attack on the Holy Artisan. Many militants have been arrested and killed in these operations. Huge quantities of weapons and explosives were recovered from the militants. For this reason, they do not have the opportunity to come back again.

On July 1, 2016, a group of militants laid siege to the Gulshan café killing of 20 hostages, including 17 foreigners. Two other police officers also lost their lives.

Besides, five attackers and a restaurant staffer died during the Operation Thunderbolt that brought an end to the nerve-racking 12-hour hostage crisis at the posh eatery.
