Worldwide coronavirus cases top 500,000

COVID-19 cases surpassed 500,000 worldwide on Friday as the new coronavirus continues to spread outside of China, the original epicenter of the outbreak.

The total number of cases now stands at 531,516 as of 6:25 a.m. ET on Friday, according to data compiled by worldometers. The virus emerged in Wuhan, China in December. It has since spread to most countries around the world, according to the World Health Organization.

The virus has now killed more than 24,061 people around the world, according to worldometers, but more than 123,000 people have recovered from the virus.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared that Europe had become the new epicenter of the virus.
