Abahani wins Independence Cup title

Abahani lifted the Independence Cup title beating defending champions Bashundhara Kings 3-0 in the final at the Birshreshtha Shaheed Mostafa Kamal Stadium in Kamalapur on Saturday (December 18).

The team won the title for the first time since 1990. It was also the Mário Lemos’s first championship.

After a goalless first half, the Sky Blues went ahead through a Rakib Hossain goal in the 54th minute before a brace from Brazilian Dorielton Gomez sealed their first victory against the Kings after six winless matches.

Striker Dorielton Gomez netted another goal in the 72nd minute leaving Bashundhara Kings in trouble. Following the victory, local powerhouse Abahani's three-year trophy drought was ended.
