The country is set to celebrate Pahela Baishakh, the first day of Bengali New Year-1431, tomorrow (April 14) upholding the rich cultural values and rituals of the Bangalees.

Pahela Baishakh is one of the most colourful festivals through which the Bangalees bid farewell to the old year and welcome the New Year.

Centring the Pahela Baishakh festival, the demand of hilsa has risen. However, there are not enough hilsa fishes in the rivers at the moment. As a result, supply has fallen and hilsa prices are skyrocketing in both retail and wholesale markets.

The prices of hilsa fish have increased by Tk 500-700 per kg in the fishing hubs and fish markets across the country including the capital Dhaka.

Visiting Kaptan bazar and Rayer bazar on Saturday (April 13), it was noticed that the price of hilsa weighing 1 kg or above is Tk 3,100-6,300 per piece as opposed to Tk 2,600-5,800 per piece ten days ago. The price of hilsa weighing 700-900 grams is Tk 2,000-2,700 per piece and that of hilsa weighing 500-600 grams is Tk 900-1,300 per piece.
