Khulna Shipyard starts to build warships, containers
KHULNA, Sept 3: Khulna Shipyard has begun to build container vessels and Landing Craft Utilities (LCU) for use alongside warships.
Initially, it will build two container vessels and two high-tech LCU craft worth almost Tk 1 billion.
The LCUs will be used for swift transportation of equipment. LCU vessels will be 137 feet long, 33 feet wide and 1.80 metres deep. The vessels will have a capacity to bear a load of 415 tonnes. They, too, will have two 600 horsepower engines.
The container vessel will be 45 feet wide and 13 feet deep. Each vessel will have two 600 horsepower engines. It will have a capacity to carry 140 containers at a time.
Chief of Staff of the Bangladesh Navy Vice Admiral M Farid Habib inaugurated the building work on Sunday.
Earlier, Khulna Shipyard started to construct five gun-ships at a cost of Tk 300 crore in cooperation with China.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has already commissioned two gun-ships and construction of three of them will be completed very soon.
Khulna Shipyard has built 75 new medium- and small-sized commercial ships and repaired 221 old ships since 1999.
