Man gets life term for raping varsity student on the pretext of marriage

A court in Khulna has sentenced a man named Rafi Islam to life term imprisonment in a case filed for raping a university student on the false pretext of marriage.

The court also fined Rafi Tk 50,000, in default of which, he will have to serve one more year in jail.

Judge Abdus Salam Khan of Khulna Women and Child Torture Prevention Tribunal-3 handed down the verdict on Wednesday (February 28).

The court’s public prosecutor (PP) Advocate Farida Ahmed confirmed the matter.

According to the court sources, Rafi Islam raped the varsity student more than once on the false pretext of marriage and later refused to marry her.

Following the incident, the victim filed a case with the court on January 8, 2023. The investigation officer of the case submitted charge sheet against the accused on February 23 of that year.

After examining witnesses and long hearing, the court handed down the verdict today, sentencing the accused to life term imprisonment.
