Leaving the capital Dhaka on the occasion of holy Eid-ul-Fitr, people have started returning to their villages with a view to sharing the joys of Eid with their families, causing a long queue of vehicles in the toll plaza area at Mawa end of the Padma Bridge on the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway.

Besides, there is heavy vehicle pressure at Munshiganj end of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Expressway.

Meanwhile, a significant number of motorcycles were seen on the highway since the morning as many commuters chose for two-wheelers to reach their destinations ahead of the anticipated rush of homebound travellers.

Due to long queues of vehicles at the toll booths, traffic movement on the highway came to a standstill. But the situation started becoming normal as the day advances.

Ahmed Haque, toll manager at Mawa end of the Padma Bridge, said that various vehicles are crossing the Padma Bridge in a quick time to reach their destinations without any major hassle.

Amirul Haider Chowdhury, additional director of the Padma Bridge site office, said: “Vehicular pressure on the highway started to increase since last night. Vehicles were seen waiting at the toll plaza for some time due to heavy traffic since Tuesday morning. However, there have been no disruptions in the Eid journey on the highways this time. There are no troubles in the area.”
