Dr Zafar Iqbal, his wife withdraw resignations

Staff Correspondent, SYLHET, Nov 27: Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) Professors Dr Muhammed Zafar Iqbal and his wife Prof Dr Yasmeen Haque withdrew their resignation letters on Wednesday as the university authorities backed off from the decision cancelling the combined admission test.

The couple withdrew their resignations following a brief meeting with SUST Vice-chancellor Prof Aminul Islam Bhuiyan in the afternoon.

VC Aminul Islam Bhuiyan said after the academic council meeting on Wednesday that they would go for a combined admission exams for the two universities, SUST and Jessore University of Science and Technology.

The date will be announced later, he said.

Dr Zafar Iqbal, a Professor at Computer Science and Engineering Department and also the Chairman of the Electrical and Electronic Department and his wife Dr Yasmeen Haque, chairman of the Physics Department, submitted their resignation letters on Tuesday over the annulment of the university’s combined admission test.

The two teachers on Tuesday night said they would need time until Wednesday to make a final decision on resignations.

Emerging from the meeting with the VC on Wednesday, Prof Iqbal told awaiting students the authorities had decided to change its decision to cancel the combined entry tests.

The academic council had requested them to withdraw their resignations.

They also received similar request from influential quarters, he said.

“That’s why we have decided to stay back in our beloved university to be part of it through thick and thin."

Earlier Prof Yasmeen Haque told the students, “How can we leave you? Never ever. We will be on the campus with you.”
