Mahbubul A Khalid’s song commemorates Felani Khatun

Ten years have passed since the murder of Felani Khatun, a Bangladeshi girl who was shot dead by Indian Border Security Force (BSF). On this day (January 1) in 2011, 15-year-old Felani was gunned down by BSF when she, along with her father, was returning home from India through Anantapur border along Phulbari upazila of Kurigram.

The unfortunate girl lived and worked in New Delhi; however, her marriage was arranged in Bangladesh for which they attempted to cross the border and shot dead after her dress became stuck in the barbed wire at the border. Felani was left up-side down, tangled in the barbed wire for four hours. As she pleaded for water during her last breath, no one came forward to help.

The ghastly photo of Felani’s body hanging from the barbwire upside down sparked protest and condemnation throughout the country.

The tragic incident stuttered renowned Bangladeshi poet, lyricist and composer Mahbubul A Khalid and he penned a song that portrays the sufferings of the poor girl.

Late composer Ahmed Imtiaz Bulbul tuned the song titled 'Felani'. The song has several versions in which veteran singers Samina Chowdhury and Dinat Jahan Munni rendered their voices.

The song has been published on Mahbubul A Khalid’s musical website ‘khalidsangeet.com’.

Hope the song will enflame the spirit of humanity among all.
