Trump-Modi meeting: Bangladesh issue likely to be discussed

Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said that the Bangladesh issue ‘might come up’ when Prime Minister Narendra Modi meets US President Donald Trump next week.

He revealed this at a press conference held at New Delhi, India on Friday (February 7).

PM Modi will fly down to the US on February 12 to meet Trump, the first such meeting between the two leaders in the latter’s second presidency.

“I can’t say if it (Bangladesh) will be discussed in Washington but it might come up,” Misri said during the press conference.

Bangladesh is once again on the boil after a mob vandalised its founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s residence in Dhaka.

In this regard, the foreign secretary said, “We would also like to point out that the safety of diplomatic premises is the responsibility of the host government, and I have no doubt that the Bangladesh authorities are fully aware of their responsibilities in this regard.”
