Trump mulls recognizing Crimea as Russian territory

The Trump administration is considering recognizing Crimea as Russian territory as part of a broader deal to end Russia’s war on Ukraine.

This move is being considered as a potential part of any future agreement aiming to conclude Moscow’s ongoing conflict with Kyiv.

This information comes from Semafor, citing two individuals who have knowledge of the matter.

If this request is made, it would align the Trump administration’s stance with that of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Putin has long viewed Crimea as an integral part of Russia.

The administration’s consideration of these options has not been reported previously. It comes as President Trump prepares for a scheduled Tuesday call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

A potential 30-day ceasefire deal is expected to be a major point of discussion during this call.

On Sunday, aboard Air Force One, President Trump informed reporters that negotiators have already discussed the division of certain assets. However, no formal decisions have been made by Trump regarding the potential recognition of Crimea as Russian territory. These possible moves are just two among many options being considered by the administration as it strives to bring an end to the war.
