US coronavirus death toll surpasses 80,000

The death toll in the U.S. from the novel coronavirus or COVID-19 surpassed the 80,000 mark early Sunday (May 10), according to data from Worldometers.
The running tally from Worldometers counted 80,037 deaths and 1,347,309 cases.
The U.S. continues to lead worldwide deaths from the virus after the UK reported 31,587, followed by Italy with 30,395.
More than 238,078 people have recovered in the U.S., according to the data.
New York is the state worst-hit by the pandemic, with 26,771 deaths and more than 343,409 cases, followed by New Jersey with 9,118 deaths.
Since the virus emerged last December in the Chinese city of Wuhan, it has spread to at least 212 countries and two international regions.
Some 4,100,788 people have been found to be infected with the virus globally and nearly 280,432 deaths. More than 1,441,478 have recovered.
