Cyclone Freddy leaves nearly 200 dead in Malawi

The death toll from a powerful cyclone that struck Malawi and neighboring countries has topped 200.

Cyclone Freddy made landfall in southern Africa earlier this month. The storm has brought heavy rain, causing landslides and floods in Malawi, Mozambique and elsewhere.

Local authorities in Malawi and Mozambique said at least 210 people are confirmed to have died.

Disaster management authorities in Malawi said on Tuesday at least 190 people are confirmed dead and more than 19,000 people have been forced to evacuate.

The Malawian government has declared a state of emergency in the hard-hit southern part of the country. Officials say the damage could extend further. Local authorities are continuing rescue operations.

The United Nations is warning that hygiene conditions could worsen in the affected areas and bring an outbreak of cholera and other infectious diseases.

The World Meteorological Organization said it is analyzing the cyclone as the case is an exceptional occurrence in the area for a number of reasons, including its longevity, and distance covered.
