Earthquake hits Pakistan, Afghanistan

A strong earthquake measuring 6.8 magnitude hit Pakistan and Afghanistan on Tuesday midnight.

Pakistan media said at least nine people were killed and over 150 were injured.

The epicentre of the earthquake was Afghanistan's Hindu Kush region, while its depth was 180 kilometres, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department.

According to reports, tremors were felt in various cities, including Islamabad, Peshawar, Charsadda, Lahore and Rawalpindi.

Strong tremors were also felt in Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot, Kot Momin, Madh Ranjha, Chakwal, Kohat and Gilgit-Baltistan areas, Pakistan media reported. Television footage showed panic-stricken citizens out on the streets.

Tremors were felt in various parts of India.

The Hindu Kush mountain range is close to the junction of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates, meaning that seismic shifts are acutely felt in the region.
