Mufti Amir Hamza put on 5-day remand

A court in Dhaka granted a five-day remand to Mufti Amir Hamza in a case filed for his alleged involvement in planning an attack with a sword in the parliament area.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Atikul Islam passed the order on Tuesday (May 25) after Inspector Kazi Mizanur Rahman of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of police produced him before the court with a 10-day remand prayer.

Earlier, CTTC officials arrested Amir Hamza from a village in the Islamic University Thana area of Kushtia on Monday and brought him to Dhaka.

CTTC officials claimed Amir Hamza has been spreading misleading information in the name of Islam at waz mahfils.

Several of his speeches found on YouTube and other social media were instigating teenagers and drawing them into militancy, they claimed.

A young man named Shakib was arrested from the parliament area with a sword on May 5 after finding information that he was planning an attack. A case over the incident was filed with Sher-e-Banglanagar police station under the Terrorism Control Act recently, according to the CTTC officials.

Shakib later gave a confessional statement before a Dhaka magistrate’s court, and the CTTC unit arrested Mufti Hamza based on his statement.
