Nation leaps another step forward to discharge shame

Two another top war criminals walked gallows for their crimes against humanity in 1971. Nation moved another step forward on way to discharge shame through their executions. BNP standing committee member Salauddin Quader Chowdhury and Jamaat-e-Islami secretary general Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed were executed at the Dhaka Central Jail at 12:55am on Sunday (22.11.2015) for committing anti-human crimes during the country’s Liberation War. Down their haughtiness with their hanging.

Both Salauddin Quader Chowdhury and Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed showed arrogance at various times during the trial at the tribunal. “No war criminals here in Bangladesh. No war crimes committed here,” according to Mojaheed. Al-Badr force has killed intellectuals, the best heads of this soil, in a bid to destroying the nation until the ultimate victory is achieved. Mojaheed was the chief of that Al-Badr force. On the other hand, Saka Chowdhury says, “These war crimes could do nothing. A single writ can foil everything.” Even Saka Chowdhury neglected the process of trial and violated the decorum of the tribunal by shouting off and continued such conduct throughout the process of the trial despite warnings. He also threatened prosecutors during the trial. His arrogant remarks made him news headlines.

It was once believed that anti-liberation forces won’t face any trial in the soil of Bengal. Trial for Anti-liberation forces sees a light when the government led by Awami League took initiative to form International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) to try those war criminals. BNP-Jamaat clique appointed lobbyists at home and abroad to halt trial for war crimes when trial begins. No conspiracy of BNP-Jamaat clique worked as present government was firm on their decision. Four war criminals have already been executed. First death row convict Abul Kalam Azad alias Bachchu Razakar has been absconding and two have died among war criminals.

War criminal Jamaat-e-Islami leader Abdul Quader Mollah was executed on December 11, 2013. It was the first ever execution for crimes against humanity. On April 11 this year, war criminal Jamat leader kamarujjaman was executed. Lastly, BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury and Jamaat leader Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed were executed at 12:55am on Sunday this year (22.11.2015).

Convicted war criminal Ghulam Azam died on October 23, 2014. International Crimes Tribunal-1 sentenced Azam to 90 years in prison on July 15 last year for masterminding crimes against humanity, genocide and other wartime offences in 1971. Moreover, War criminal Abdul Alim, who was sentenced to imprisonment till death for his 1971 offences, died of cancer at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) on August 30, 2014. The International Crimes Tribunal-2 on October 9 last year sentenced him to imprisonment till death for crimes against humanity and genocide during the 1971 Liberation War.

The liability the Awami League had to try war criminals is being gradually discharged through these executions. The country will be free from shame only when the government will be able to ensure maximum punishment for all war criminals. The departed soul will get eternal peace if the trial for war criminals ends properly. Nation will be free from shame through their executions.
