7 sentenced to death over war crimes in Bagerhat

A tribunal has sentenced seven people to death for committing a series of crimes against humanity, including murder and rape, in Bagerhat during the 1971 Liberation War.

A three-member panel of the International Crimes Tribunal led by Justice Md Shahinur Islam passed the verdict on Thursday (November 30). Two other members – Justice Abu Ahmed Jamadar and Justice KM Hafizul Alam.

The convicted persons are – Khan Akram, Makbul Mollah, Sheikh Md Ukil Uddin, Khan Ashraf Ali, Rustum Ali Mollah, Sheikh Idris and Sheikh Rafiqul Islam Babul. Of them, Khan Akram, Makbul Mollah and Sheikh Md Ukil Uddin are in prison now.

Prosecutor Rana Dasgupta and Rezia Sultana Chaman stood for the state while Gazi HM Tamin moved for the petitioners.
