Fertilizer embezzlement: Ex-MP Poton, 4 others get bail

A court in Dhaka on Wednesday (December 6) granted bail to five people including former lawmaker Kamrul Ashraf Khan Poton of Narsingdi-2 on surrender in a case filed for allegedly embezzling fertilizer worth around Tk 581 crore.

The accused surrendered before the court of Dhaka First Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Foysal Atiq Bin Kader and filed the bail plea. After the hearing, the court granted the bail till January 15.

The other four accused are Poton Traders, a contracting firm owned by Kamrul Ashraf Khan Poton, general manager Md Shahadat Hossain Nipu, Nazmul Alam Badal, its North Bengal representative Sohrab Hossain and Khulna representative Md Ataur Rahman.

The fertilizer imported by the government was embezzled from November 1, 2021, to July 30, 2022. Following the incident, Anti-Corruption Commission deputy director Md Rafikuzzaman filed the case against them on November 26.
