6 ministers, 49 lawmakers dropped from AL ticket

Staff Correspondent, DHAKA, Nov 30: A total of six ministers and state ministers and 49 sitting lawmakers have been dropped from the Awami League ticket for the 10th parliament election scheduled to be held on 5 January.


The ministers who did not get AL nominations are   former Communications Minister Syed Abul Hossain, Planning Minister AK Khandakar, Social Welfare Minister Enamul Haque Mostafa Shahid, Fisheries and Live Stock Minister Abdul Latif Biswas, Information and Communications Technology Minister Mostofa Faruque Mohammed, State Minister for Power Enamul Haque and Youth and Sports Minister Ahad Ali Sarkar.

 

Former Communications Minister Abul Hossain who lost his ministry for alleged involvement in Padma Bridge scam did not get nomination this time.

 

Former minister and MP (Jessore-2) ambassador Mostofa Faruque Mohammed who served Abul Hossain’s SHAHCO that was blamed for corruption conspiracy in the Padma bridge project, was also dropped.

 

Golam Rabbani, a leader of the 2006 Kansat movement during the rule of the BNP, was given party ticket for Chapainawabganj-1 constituency, replacing former state minister for energy M Enamul Haque.

 

AFM Bahauddin Nasim has managed the party ticket for Madaripur-3 seat, the constituency of Syed Abul Hossain. The party leaders and activists shouted aloud as Syed Ashraful Islam announced AFM Bahauddin Nasim’s name.

 

Md Golam Maula Rony, who embarrassed the government by making anti-Awami League statements in TV talk shows and was later arrested for assaulting a TV reporter, was not given party ticket for the Patuakhali-3 seat.

 

But AKM Jahangir Hussain, who was deprived of the nomination in the last election for his anti-Sheikh Hasina stance during the rule of the military-backed caretaker government, got the party ticket for the Patuakhali-3 constituency.

 

Talukdar Mohammad Towhid Jung Murad, who was backer of the Rana Plaza owner Sohel Rana, was picked as party candidate. Dr Enamur Rahman, the owner of the Enam Hospital that earned fame for treating the victims of the Rana Plaza in Savar, won the nomination for the Savar constituency (Dhaka-19).

 

The Awami League leadership was embarrassed as the world media linked Towhid Jung Murad with the Rana Plaza collapse stories. He was in the bad books of the government as huge complaints of land occupation were brought against him.

 

Controversial leader Shamim Osman got the party ticket for the Narayanganj-4 seat in place of popular actress Sarah Begum Kabari.

Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina will take part in the upcoming 10th National Parliamentary Elections from Rangpur-6 and Gopalganj-3 constituencies of Jatiya Sangsad.

 

The candidates also include former Chhatra League leaders, former footballer and cricketer.
Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, an elected MP from the women’s’ reserved seats, also failed to get nomination for the Noakhali-1 constituency.

 

Tanvir Imam, the son of the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s former adviser HT Imam, received nomination for the Sirajganj-4 constituency.

 

Another controversial MP of the Mymensingh-10 constituency, Ghyas Uddin Ahmed, who opened fire on party workers, failed to confirm his nomination.

 

Two Awami League presidium members, Mohammad Nasim and Kazi Zafar Ullah - who were charged with corruption by the military-backed interim administration - got nomination for the Sirajganj-1 and Faridpur-4 seats respectively.

 

The Awami League announced the names of candidates for 297 seats. The Dhaka-17, Dhaka-8 and Kushtia-2 constituencies were kept vacant for JP Chairman HM Ershad, Workers` Party`s Rashed Khan Menon and JSD`s Hasanul Huq Inu.

 

Moreover, noted film actress Kabari was not given nomination. Instead, Shamim Osman was given nomination from Narayanganj-5 constituency.

 

Awami League General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam announced the final list of the names of candidates at Dhanmondi party office on Friday afternoon.

 

He said the parliamentary board approved the list.

 

Ashraful Islam, who is also the LGRD Minister, said Awami League has given nominations to the candidates on the basis of the opinion of grassroots level leaders.

 

He said the upcoming election is very important for Bangladesh. `There is no alternative to elections in democratic advancement. We hope all political parties will take part in the elections.`
 
Ashraful Islam said Awami League is a major political party of the country. Some 2,600 people bought nomination forms. Each of them was eligible for receiving nomination. `Since the number of seats is only 300, it could not be possible to give nominations to many eligible candidates.`

 

He also said: "Today I am announcing the nominations of Awami League candidates. The candidates of grand alliance will be announced later on."
