National election: EC to start appeals disposal today

As many as 561 aspirants lodged appeals to the Election Commission (EC) against the rejection of nomination forms by respective returning officers (ROs) for the next national polls.
The commission headed by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal will start hearing on these appeals from Sunday (December 10).
Some 2,716 aspirants including 747 independent candidates submitted their nomination papers to the EC for contesting the next general election. Of them, the forms of 731 aspirants were cancelled and 1,985 nomination forms were accepted during scrutiny carried out by respective returning offices.
A total of 3,065 candidates submitted nomination forms against 300 seats. Later, applications of 786 aspirants including BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zai, were cancelled by the returning officers.
In a press conference yesterday, EC secretary Md Jahangir Alam said the EC accepted the appeal in the last five days. This time a total of 561 appeals have been filed. Application has been filed to cancel the candidature of the valid candidate too.
