Suhrawardy’s 50th anniversary of death today

Staff Correspondent, Dhaka, Dec 5: The 50th death anniversary of Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy will be observed in the country today.
Suhrawardy was an eminent Bengali nationalist, liberal democrat, politician and statesman during the first half of the twentieth century.
Born in 1893 at Midnapore in Paschimbanga of India, Suhrawardy was chief minister of undivided Bengal (1946) and the prime minister of Pakistan (1956-57).
Different political and socio-cultural organisations, including ruling Awami League, have chalked out various programmes to observe the day.
The programmes include placing wreaths at grave of the great leader, discussion meetings, Quran khwani, milad and doa mahfil.
In separate messages, President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed profound respect to the memory of Suhrawardy on the occasion of his death anniversary.
They prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul of Suhrawardy.
President Abdul Hamid, in his message, said Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy is a glittering name in the history of democracy in Bangladesh.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said Suhrawardy worked throughout his life for establishing democratic rights of the people and flourishing non-communal politics.
The Prime Minister said the Awami League had flourished further under the efficient leadership of Suhrawardy.
