HC orders to give retirement benefits to 5 lakh teachers, staff

The High Court has ordered the concerned bodies of the government to give retirement benefits within six months to around five lakh teachers and employees of the private educational institutions under monthly pay order or MPO against 10 per cent deduction instead of 6.0 per cent from their salary.

The High Court bench comprising Justice Naima Haider and Justice Kazi Zeenat Haque passed the order on Thursday (February 22).

The High Court said it is an eternal truth that teachers have to waste their time for years to get their retirement benefits. They cannot escape from this harassment. The salary of a primary school teacher should also be taken into consideration. For this, their retirement benefits should be paid within six months. Teachers cannot go door to door for years to get these benefits.

Earlier on September 15, 2022, the High Court issued a rule upon the concerned bodies of the government to explain as to why they should not be directed to give retirement benefits to the teachers and employees of the private educational institutions against 10 per cent deduction instead of 6.0 per cent from their salary to pension and welfare trust fund.

It also asked the authorities to explain as to why they should not be directed to pay the retirement financial benefits to the teachers and employees of the private educational institutions within one year or within a specific period.

Lawyer Siddique Ullah Miah is conducting the case on behalf of the writ petitioners.
