Bailey Road fire: HC forms high-level probe committee

The High Court (HC) has formed a high-level committee to conduct an inquiry into the fire incident at a restaurant in Dhaka’s Bailey Road.

Security secretary of the home ministry will lead the probe committee. The probe body includes representatives from police, RAJUK, fire service, BUET specialists, Dhaka South and North City Corporations.

The HC bench of Justice Naima Haider and Justice Kazi Zinat Hoque passed the order following two separate writ petitions on Monday (March 4).

The newly formed committee will submit its reports in the next four months regarding reasons behind the fire. The committee will also recommend the steps to prevent fire in the city buildings.

Advocate Md Eunus Ali Akond and Ishrat Jahan stood for the petition during the hearing.

The court also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned of the government to explain why their failure to set up fire exits in the Bailey Road building should not be declared illegal.

Earlier on Thursday night, a deadly fire broke out at Green Cozy Cottage building on the capital's Bailey Road, leaving 46 people, so far, dead and many others injured.
