Bhashantek cylinder blast: 6 of a family sustain burn injuries

Six members of a family, including women and children, sustained burn injuries in a fire caused by gas cylinder explosion in Bhashantek area in Dhaka on Friday (April 12).

The incident took place at a house on culvert road in Bhashantek area around 4 am.

The injured were identified as Meherunnessa, 65, Md Liton, 52, Surjo Banu, 30, Sujon, 8, Lamia, 7, and Liza Aktar, 18.

Caretaker of that house Mohammad Sifat Hossain brought the injured to the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery early on Friday.

Confirming the matter, Resident Doctor of the Burn Institute Tariqul Islam said: “All six people who sustained burn injuries are being treated in the emergency department. All of them are in critical condition.”

Md Liton suffered 67% burns, his mother Meherunnessa 47%, wife Surjo Banu 82%, child Sujan 43%, Lamia 55% and Liza 30%, he added.

It was learnt that the accident took place in the shanty town of Shyamalbangla residential area in Bhashantek. Because the room was accumulating gas as the cylinder leaked, an exposition took place on Friday morning due to the lighting of a mosquito coil.
