Shib Narayan Das passes away

Shib Narayan Das, the designer of the first national flag of Bangladesh, has passed away.

He was 78.

The valiant freedom fighter breathed his last around 9:00am at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University on Friday (April 19).

Earlier, he was admitted to a private hospital in the capital. Later, he was shifted to BSMMU after his condition deteriorated.

The first flag designed by him was hoisted on Dhaka University campus on March 2, 1971. It had a yellow map of the new country in a red circle symbolising the sun on a green background.

The flag was later redesigned by artist Kamrul Hasan on Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s instruction.
