Over 30pc votes cast in 2nd phase upazila polls: CEC 

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal has said that more than 30 per cent votes were cast in the second phase of the sixth upazila parishad election.

The CEC said this while addressing newsmen at Agargaon Election Bhaban in the capital on Tuesday (May 21).

Earlier this morning, voting began at 8:00 am in 156 upazilas and continued till 4:00 pm.

Voter turnout was low in the polling stations. Apart from this, some sporadic incidents of violence took places in different parts of the country.

EC secretary Jahangir Alam said the voter turnout was about 17 percent in the first four hours of the second phase of upazila elections.

Some 1,824 candidates, including 603 chairman contenders contested in the 156 upazila parishads, against a total of 468 posts –-chairman post, vice chairman and women vice chairman posts in each upazila.
