Water transport in coastal areas suspended

As the cyclonic storm ‘Remal’ is approaching Bangladesh, the government has decided to suspend the operation of all types of water transport services in coastal districts.
The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) made the direction on Saturday afternoon.
According to Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), Remal is likely to hit the coastal regions of Satkhira, Khulna and Chattogram by Sunday (May 26) evening.
Cautionary great danger signal may be issued on Saturday night. Parts of Satkhira and Cox’s Bazar could be significantly impacted by the cyclonic storm, with a potential seven to ten-feet high tidal surge, heavy rainfall, and landslides in the hilly areas of Chattogram.
Almost 4,000 shelter centres have been prepared in the coastal districts, equipped with adequate dry food. A total of 80,000 volunteers are ready to tackle the situation and all necessary preparations have been taken.
